Announcing Keynote Speaker Dr. John Paffett

paffett_johnThe 2016 SmallSat Symposium is pleased to welcome Surrey Satellite Technology US CEO, Dr. John Paffett as Keynote Speaker to this years event.  Dr. Paffett is chief executive officer of Surrey Satellite Technology US LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of world-leading small satellite manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in the United Kingdom. As a long-time executive of SSTL, Dr. Paffett was named CEO of Surrey US at its inception in 2008 to cultivate the rapidly growing U.S. market for cost-effective small satellite systems, applications, and services.

In a dual role, Dr. Paffett continues to serve as director of telecommunications and navigation for SSTL with responsibility for those programs and the group’s strategic development activities. He is also the chief executive officer of Surrey Satellite Services Limited, the SSTL subsidiary responsible for provision of launch and launch service activities.

Dr. Paffett has proven engineering, management, and business development skills, with a track record of working with international space industry partners in securing new business opportunities and delivering projects. He is accustomed to interfacing with senior officials in the international space community and skilled at developing innovative approaches to meet challenging space business goals.

Dr. Paffett holds a bachelor of science with honors in electronic engineering and a PhD in electronic engineering from the University of Surrey. He is an author and co-author of over 35 scientific and engineering publications.

Announcing Keynote Speaker Steve Jurvetson

SteveJurvetson_DFJ_BlackBackgroundThe 2016 SmallSat Symposium is excited to welcome Steve Jurvetson as Keynote Speaker to next years event. Steve is a partner at the venture capital firm DFJ. His current board responsibilities include Planet Labs, SpaceX, Synthetic Genomics, and Tesla Motors (TSLA). He was the founding VC investor in Hotmail, Interwoven (IWOV), Kana (KANA), and NeoPhotonics (NPTN). He also led DFJ’s investments in other companies that were acquired for $12 billion in aggregate.

Previously, Steve was an R&D Engineer at Hewlett-Packard, where seven of his communications chip designs were fabricated. He also worked in p
roduct marketing at Apple and NeXT Software and management consulting with Bain & Company.

At Stanford University, he finished his BSEE in 2.5 years and graduated #1 in his class, as the Henry Ford Scholar. Steve also holds an MS in electrical engineering and MBA from Stanford. Steve was chosen by Deloitte as “Venture Capitalist of the Year”, by Forbes as one of “Tech’s Best Venture Investors”, by the VC Journal as one of the “Ten Most Influential VCs”, by Fortune as part of their “Brain Trust of Top Ten Minds” and “The Valley’s Sharpest VC” on the cover of Business 2.0
